The
following federal and state government agencies regulate
environmental activities and provide information and resources
on regional environmental issues:
Federal
U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers New Orleans District - plans,
designs, constructs, operates and maintains federally
sponsored navigation, flood control, hurricane protection and
water resources development projects in 30,000 square miles of
south central and coastal Louisiana
National
Weather Service - New Orleans Region - local office of the
nationn's weather watchers. Minerals Management Service (MMS) Gulf Coast
Region - manage the mineral
resources (oil and gas) of the Outer Continental Shelf and
Coastal areas
U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service (Louisiana - Southeast Region 4)
- conserves, protects, and enhances
fish and wildlife and their habitats. Manages wildlife
conservation areas.
U.S. Department of the Interior
- the nation's principle conservation
agency, charged with the mission to protect and provide access
to our Nation's natural and cultural heritage.
U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency Region 6 (Dallas) - Includes Louisiana -
mission is to protect human health and environment.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(Dept. of Commerce) - conducts research and gathers data
about the global oceans, atmosphere, space, and the
sun.
State Department of Natural Resources - mission is to is to preserve and enhance
the nonrenewable natural resources of the state, consisting of
land, water, oil, gas, and other minerals, through
conservation, regulation, and management/exploitation, to
ensure that the state of Louisiana realizes appropriate
economic benefit from its asset base.
Office of Coastal Restoration
and Management - responsible for the construction of projects
aimed at creating, protecting and restoring the state's
wetlands.
Department of Environmental Quality
- mission is to maintain a healthful and safe
environment for the people of Louisiana
Department of Wildlife & Fisheries
- is the state agency responsible for
management of the state's renewable natural resources
including all wildlife and all aquatic life.
